Cannabinoids are organic compounds in the hemp plant. They bind to receptors from the endocannabinoid nervous system in humans, which they are named after. The cannabinoids have a diverse structure. There are more than 100 varieties known to researchers, but there are a few main varieties.
In essence, people have begun to learn about the health effects that cannabinoids have on humans around the 1990’s when they had discovered the first cannabinoid receptor – CB1. A little later, CB2 was also discovered. These receptors are found in the central and peripheral nervous system as well as in many human organs. Cannabinoid molecules bind to these receptors and cause different positive effects. Numerous scientific and medical studies have reached to conclusions which confirm the healing properties of cannabinoids. What’s more, the list is constantly complemented with newly discovered healing effects.
Below we have shown several basic cannabinoids that are known for their therapeutic effects.
Tetrahydrocannabinol – THC
THC is the psychotropic element in cannabis that affects the mood of a person. In addition to its psychoactive properties, THC improves sleep, stimulates appetite, reduces tumor growth or slows the growth of cancer cells, works as antidepressant and has anti-inflammatory benefits. Because of its psychoactive properties, THC is banned and illegal to use in some countries, including Bulgaria.
Cannabidiol – CBD
Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive organic compound that has a number of health effects. CBD has anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, anti-emetic, antioxidant, antidepressant, soothing and immunomodulating benefits. It can be used legally as a food supplement and a therapeutic agent.
Cannabigenol – CBG
Cannabigenol can be found in the hemp strains before they reach maturity and after that it transforms into other cannabinoids. That is the reason why it is found in small quantities. The CBG is known to have antibiotic properties and also acts as an agent that improves sleep and reduces anxiety.
Cannabichromene – CBC
Cannabinoids often complement one another by enhancing the healing effect. CBC improves the effect of THC by reducing anxiety and working as an agent with analgesic properties.
Canabinol – CBN
Cannabinol is formed from tetrahydrocannabinol acid when the plant is dry. CBN stimulates appetite, relieves pain and has analgesic properties.
